The Network Science and Engineering Council (NetSE), GENI Project Office (GPO) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have all agreed to the roles in this document. This is a living document that will be updated from time to time. Please send comments or suggestions to geni-input.

NSF is a partner to both organizations and has oversight roles and responsibilities.

NetSE Council

  • Definitive source of “what we need in GENI”
  • Technical advisory and review role to GPO
  • Home for the Architecture Review Board (ARB)
  • CS community builder
  • Principal spokespeople / luminaries for GENI
  • Home for international collaboration and federation policy aspects of GENI, other than governmental
  • Develop and maintain Research and Education Plan
  • Develop and maintain End-to-End use cases/scenarios document
  • Build and strengthen the community since outreach is a key to GENI’s success; be the principal spokespeople / luminaries for GENI
  • Provide 3-5 candidates and support GPO hiring for Engineering Architect
  • Review and provide feedback, within 10 days, on architecture document, requirements document & Sub-system design documents with each release
  • Review facility working group documents at each 3-month for readiness review
  • Review Change Control Board (CCB) methodology
  • Participate and provide feedback in pre-CDR, PDR and FDR reviews
  • Help prioritize risks and participate in risk mitigation prototyping proposal review and selection process
  • Support GPO on specific policy issues, i.e. Intellectual Property (IP)
  • Guide GPO in advance of major decisions

GPO

  • Project management and execution
  • GENI architecture and system engineering
  • Cost and schedule estimates for construction
  • Legal and contractual management, including IP
  • Management of risk reduction process (prototyping etc.)
  • Outreach and broader social impact for under-represented groups & industry
  • Support the NetSE Council in prioritization of experiment requirements
  • Create a GENI facility construction plan that is credible, with high assurance on schedule & budget
  • Pass MREFC Planning Phase process with flying colors:
    Plan, design and prepare CDR and associated documents
    Plan, design and prepare PDR and associated documents
    Plan, design and prepare FDR and associated documents
  • Create and maintain architecture document, requirements document, & Sub-system system design documents
  • Organize and manage Facility Working Groups, under direction of the Engineering Architect
  • Create and execute risk reduction plan (prototyping efforts) by working with NSF, research community and industry.
  • Create and maintain an Outreach Plan
  • Support the NetSE Council and NSF in community building.
  • Support the NetSE Council as spokespeople
  • Ensure openness and fairness in selection of prototyping and risk reduction activities
  • Provide transparency and open access into the GENI facility and its design during the planning and construction phases
